As more technology is included in our vehicles, fleets are becoming overwhelmed with data. You've got telematics, cameras, ELDs, rollover detection, radar, sonar, electric toothbrushes. If you're like most safety and training professionals, you're looking for ways to make all that data actionable and, if possible, somewhat automated.

Instructional Technologies can help you use that information to improve your fleet's safety, by matching up lessons from our Incident Based Training (IBT) series of lessons. Let's look at a few examples:

 

Example 1: Hard-Braking Data

For instance, you identify several drivers with higher than average hard braking incidents. These drivers may be candidates for the IBT - Speed Management lesson. Hard braking is often linked to driving too fast for conditions, which means that the driver is routinely braking rapidly to slow the vehicle down.

These same drivers may also be following too close, this means that they do not have the space or time in front of their vehicle to adjust to hazards and force them to brake heavily to avoid collisions. The IBT - Space Management lesson would also be a good choice for these drivers.

The combination of Hard Brake incidents and a cab-facing camera could offer you additional clues: was the driver distracted by something in the cab? Cell phones are not the only distraction drivers face and these distractions could also lead to Hard Brake incidents to avoid collisions. IBT - Driver Distractions lesson would be a great selection for these drivers to demonstrate the hazards of distracted driving.

Using data that you have can help you get in front of an avoidable collision, by providing training, before a serious incident occurs.

 

Example 2: ELD Violations

With the majority of trucks now using electronic log books, drivers hours are now recorded automatically, but it does not mean that they do not have violations with some many rules to follow. The IBT - Hours of Service lesson provides a great review of the Hours of Service rules to help the driver comply with the regulations.

 

Example 3: Aggressive or Negligent Driving

There is also a lot of information that is still collected the old fashioned way, by third parties calling in by phone to report an incident or accident. A whole range of Incident Based Training that is available to your drivers following these events. The most common complaints that fleets receive would be addressed by assigning some of the following Incident Based Training lessons:


Example 4: The Stop-Gap 

But what if you do not know what happened? For instance, your driver had an incident with another vehicle in Florida and your terminal is in Oregon, but you are not exactly sure what happened until you get the opportunity for a face to face discussion.

So from a liability standpoint, you’d probably assign IBT - Defensive Driving to the driver, and instruct him it must be taken immediately, before he leaves Florida. This is a generic action, but if you can’t connect with him, this is better than taking no action.

After meeting with the driver at your terminal three days later, you discover that the driver collided with a car while making a right hand turn. At this time, you may also assign the driver IBT - Intersections and IBT - Right Turns to remind the driver about safely negotiating turns and dealing with intersections.

 

Using Incident-Based Training with Sentix Pro

There are three simple ways to use the Incident-Based Training courses with Sentix Pro:

Assign to an Individual Driver: The simplest way: Just assign the appropriate course to the driver. Boom, done. This works for both Sentix Base and Sentix Pro.

Assign a Group of Courses: If you want to take a more aggressive tact, you could assign a few courses. The best way to do this: Create a group assignment, add in the best lessons. When a person has an incident, you just add them to that group.

Automate Assignments: Automating assignments is the most technically complex, but also the best way to reduce your liability. Using a system like Netradyne's computer-based camera, you build a profile of a driver's behaviors. If something like hard braking happens too often, the system automatically assigns a course.
